　 北海道各地沿岸から九州天草，太平洋岸，日本海岸，ポリプは樹状群体，クラゲは6〜8月（岡田ら 1965）， カリフォルニアの湾内と河口域，移入種の可能性（Smith Carlton 1975; 1989）， 日本各地（内海 1983; 1990，西村 1992）．
　 日本各地に生息，傘の径と触手の数との相関で2形に分かれ，分子系統学的には3形に分かれるが， 分類学的な結論は出ていない（Kubota 2005，久保田 2009, 久保田 2011）．
　 クラゲ芽はヒドロ茎の上にでき，ポリプは Dendroclava と呼ばれた（内海 1983; 1990）． ヒドロ茎が単管のポリプを和歌山県田辺湾から初記録（久保田 2011）．

　 南日本に分布する2種は有性世代のクラゲから無性世代のポリプへ繰り返し若返り， 不死の多細胞生物として知られる（久保田 2009）．
