　 三崎，潮間帯の岩石上に生える海藻の下（岡田ら 1965）， 若狭湾，瀬戸内海，駿河湾から佐世保，小笠原諸島，種子島以南（西村 1992）． オーストラリア（Stephen Edmonds 1972，Edmonds 1987，Beesley et al. 2000）， タンザニア（Edmonds 1987）． 暖水性広分布種，潮間帯から浅海（西村 1992）．

　 模式産地は日本，"coast of Misaki Laboratory, Tokyo Bay"（Stephen Edmonds 1972）， 模式標本はおそらく失われたため（Nishikawa Ueshima 2011）， 三宅島産標本を新模式として国立科学博物館へ，同新副模式を National Museum of Natural History, Washington D.C. へ登録（Edward Cutler 1981）
